Faculty Workshop — Quick Academic Skills Bites: Supporting First-Year Students
Podcast of the Georgetown College faculty workshop sponsored by the Faculty Center for Teaching and Vocation held on Tuesday, April 17th at Georgetown College. See the details below and click the player to listen to the podcast. Note: The podcast starts a few minutes into the presentation.
Quick Academic Skills Bites: Supporting First-Year Students
Ruth Benander, Professor of English and Robin Lightner, Associate Professor of Psychology, Raymond Walters College, University of Cincinnati.
Workshop Introduction:
To equip students with academic success skills early in their college careers, we embedded academic success lessons in several content courses. The lesson topics included time management, learning beliefs, defining the discipline, and mapping the chapter. Over 200 students provided work products and completed surveys to provide data on the effectiveness of this approach. In this workshop, we will discuss how this approach supports the research on transfer of learning, examine attitudes toward the amount of structure needed for first-year students, work through several of the Skills Bites, and participants will leave with a workbook of course-ready activities that can be integrated into any course.
