Reading Tip for the Week

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Show your child that the skills he is learning in school are an important part of the things he will do as an adult. Let him see you reading books, newspapers and computer screens; writing reports, letters, e-mails and lists; using math to figure change or to measure for new carpeting; and doing things that require thought and effort.

To check your child’s understanding of what he or she is reading, occasionally pause and ask your child questions about the characters and events in the story.  Ask your child why he or she thinks a character acted in a certain way and ask your child to support the answer with information from the story.

Reading Tip for the Week

Monday, January 14th, 2008

When your child reads aloud to you and makes a mistake, let him or her finish the sentence before pointing out the error.  This will give your child time to correct the mistatke on his or her own.  If he or she does not notice the mistake, point out one or two words he or she has missed and  give help to read the word correctly.

After your child has stopped to correct a word he has read, have him or her go back and reread the entire sentence from the beginning to make sure he or she understands what the sentence is saying.
